    The Data Access Specialist will provide science, stewardship and support services for the Data Stewardship Division (DSD). This position requires unique skills and experience with data archive and metadata generation and management.

    Primary Duties:

    The Data Access Specialist shall maintain and develop applications, configurations, and procedures for cross-Center data discovery, dissemination, and access services.  Tasking includes:


    • Develop and maintain NCEI's intranet web and document management systems for internal workforce access to NCEI policies, standards, operating procedures, and other scientific, technical, and operational information.
    • Develop, deploy, and sustain applications, services, and interfaces for the NCEI web, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and databases.
    • Provide operations support for data, products, databases, data tools, and systems.
    • Provide operations support for GIS systems and capabilities.
    • Perform operations analysis in support of systems development, process and capability improvements, identification of data anomalies, trends, and opportunities for improvement, and determining the impacts of proposed and implemented operational changes.
    • Provide support for applications transitioning from commercial relational database system to open source relational database systems. This will include working with database administrators to provide performance tuning, operating system interaction, quality assurance, process improvement, and problem resolution.
    • Provide cloud project management support for conceptualizing, planning, coordinating, tracking, reporting, guiding and facilitating successful deployment of cloud-based solutions that meet NOAA requirements, and identifying opportunities to increase NOAA's use of cloud-based services.



    • Bachelor’s degree in Science or a related technical field.
    • Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience (BS Degree), Minimum 1 year of relevant experience (PhD)
    • Experience in implementing best practices in data management while supporting multiple data product types (i.e., in situ, satellite) on multiple data management and processing IT infrastructure (ex. NCEI, CLASS, ESPC).
    • Thorough knowledge of metadata, and DOIs, ISO, and data format standards and best practices required.


    U.S. citizenship is required. Selected candidate will be required to complete a background investigation.
