Datzilla is a web-based system used to report and track errors against NOAA datasets and data products. Datzilla provides the ability NOAA employees and State Climatologists to submit error reports for Source Systems and Data-Products defined within a Datzilla database. Source Systems correlate to climate data delivery systems and/or data archives while Data-Products are individual products derived from climate datasets. The system allows users to attach supporting documentation to illustrate the error or to suggest 'fixes' to the data problem. Data Managers resolve these errors through on-line communication with the error reporters and incorporate corrected information into permanent data archives.

The Datzilla Gatekeeper Specialist will provide science, stewardship and support services for the Center for Weather and Climate (CWC).  This Specialist is the center point for interaction with NCEI partners to identify and resolve data quality issues and ensure the exchange of data and information necessary for the continued acquisition and quality of data streams that are among those listed by NOAA as ”Critical Observing Systems” (degradation or loss of the system would have significant impact on NOAA’s mission).

    Primary Duties:

The Datzilla Gatekeeper Specialist shall perform quality control for climate science data. Tasking includes:

    • Perform Datzilla “gatekeeper“ services for assigning error reports to NCEI points of contact, developing corrective action alternatives, tracking resolution status, and coordinating with the Datzilla system owner.
    • Communicate status for data quality issues to internal and external (e.g. NWS) stakeholders through summaries of open actions, trends, statistics, reports, documents, and educational materials.
    • Evaluate and recommend effectiveness improvements for the Correction Database processes and procedures.
    • Provide expert data quality support and Correction Database guidance for programs and projects, such as the Hourly Precipitation Data (HPD) and Digital Archives Databases.
    • Develop responses and respond to customer queries for in-situ database projects, such as GHCN-D/GHCN-M.
    • Provide ThreadEx focal point services for ensuring NWS and contractors have sufficient data and information to complete annual ThreadEx product updates.
    • Produce monthly reports for Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) Surface Network (GSN) and GCOS Upper Air Network (GUAN) in support of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) GCOS.
    • Perform WMO GCOS point of contact duties for resolving data collection problems with GSN, GUAN, and associated CLIMAT messages.
    • Service customer e-mail queries for the Global Historical Climatology Network-Monthly (GHCN-M) dataset, including the Contractor coordinating with NCEI scientists to ensure customers receive a query response.
    • Accomplish dataset activities required for the preparation and update of archive Submission Agreements.

    Required Education/Skills:

    • Bachelors degree in Science or a related technical field.
    • Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience (BS Degree), Minimum 1 year of relevant experience (PhD)
    • Experience in management and quality control of climatological datasets, metadata, and the associated observing procedures used in both manual and automated observing networks, and climatological data standards and the systems designed to document and manage the flow of information associated with corrections to climatological datasets including use of Oracle (or another open source database in the future) databases, SQL Developer, Linux/Unix, FTP.

    U.S. citizenship is required.
