    Responsibilities

    The Environmental Programming Specialist will provide science, stewardship and support services for the Center for Weather and Climate (CWC).

    The candidate will possess the expertise necessary for maintaining datasets and products that are developed from systems that are among those listed by NOAA as ”Critical Observing Systems” to ensure the continuity of algorithm design required to meet the needs of NCEI and its stakeholders for high quality weather and climate products.

     

    Primary Duties:

    The Environmental Programming Specialist shall develop, deploy, and sustain use-inspired environmental information products and services. Tasking includes:

    • Prepare and conduct user engagement activities for the purpose of eliciting user needs and validating product and service requirements.
    • Produce product and service functional requirements from user needs.
    • Conduct applied climatological research on use-inspired products and services.
    • Communicate information for products and services, including; peer-reviewed articles, informational briefings, content for project proposals, white papers, web content, social media, and documentation.
    • Sustain and enhance collaboration and relationships with key partners.
    • Manage science products for their complete life-cycle, including conception, design, implementation, and sustainment.
    • Maintain operational applications and software for generating products and services.
    • Incorporate technical change decisions resulting from reviews and evaluations for products and services.
    • Design, code, document, test, evaluate, operate and sustain software applications for products and services, drawing upon NCEI's data holdings.

     

     

     

    Qualifications

    Required Education/Skills:

    • Bachelors degree in Science or a related technical field.
    • Minimum of 12 years of relevant experience (BS Degree); 8 years with PhD
    • Experience in performing science-based data analysis through the use of advanced programming techniques.
    • Expertise in structured programming languages FORTRAN and Python, shell scripting, and graphics packages; such as GrADS, and demonstrated knowledge of data manipulation and analysis capabilities including quality control of environmental data and developing algorithms while supporting scientific articles.
    • Expertise necessary for maintaining datasets and products that are developed from systems that are among those listed by NOAA as ”Critical Observing Systems” to ensure the continuity of algorithm design required to meet the needs of NCEI and its stakeholders for high quality weather and climate products.

     

    U.S. citizenship  is required.
